In the course students will learn to work and design on an urban scale and work out their urban interventions on the architectural scale. The studio is divided into three phases; a masterplan phase, an architectural design phase and a book design.

Sae Maeul market inside the site would be a critical asset in making the local area as a whole active again. I thought it is important to improve and develop the market for this reason. Despite the fact that there is very few traditional market around current market, users are limited to the locals. In my opinion, three reasons can be pointed out behind this. Poor street environment, small-scale contrary to nearest markets and the fact that there is not enough program besides purchasing goods. In order for market to attract more people to it, and to become a more-charming public space, it needs a special feature which differenciates it from other markets. Thus, I set my goal to innovate current compact street-style grocery market into campus-style complex market. So that it can be a viable market. It will be turned into a place where the locals think of it as an active and fun place, constantly drags visitors into the area and also activate the local economy.

Activating the Handcraft Area by Banding Houses
According to the master plan, there are five nodes and each of it has different theme. And especially the hanscraft zone is result of aggregation. There are some handcraft shops but they were strewn across the site. By gatehr them, it is expected to enhance the cohesion of crafters and make the node popular for visitors and residents. So, at this node, hand-crafters are gathered together and do their work, held some classes or pop-up shops. However to makes benefits of aggregation stronger, it’s better to have center or core place for them at inner area. So new program like simple office and inner area is needed. But breaking and making a new building can harm the residents who live in there so much. Instead we just can use the basement floor or entrance floor for center. To satisfy the profit scale of the center , just banded three buildings and use their lowest floor. That part can be called as expansion of square or interior square. However the upper parts can be remained for residents with new houses. Upper side of the existing house, some new houses are added. At the same time new community places for the residents are also added.
